When the movie "The Wizard of Oz" first came out, people were amazed by what they saw. The colors, music and dreamlike setting still provide a wonder for many people today. However, there's one thing that was not as special as it seems today: the film quality. In 1938, this was not a factor at all because the film had been shot on black-and-white film with nitrate stock that couldn't be developed within two years of being shot. Nowadays though, we have been able to recover lost footage from damaged film and digital media for decades. This means that we are able to make new, upgraded versions of classic films.
The first thing you'll notice is the different colors in the movie. The original movie was filmed mostly in black-and-white, but there's plenty of color added to this version. You can see this vividly when Dorothy gets the red slippers, for example. On top of that, there are some new effects added to really enhance the experience. When Dorothy first enters Oz, she flies through a grassy field with pretty pink jellylike flowers blooming around her. It's an interesting change from the original film where she simply walks through fields and over hills until finally arriving at Oz. The second thing that will be immediately noticeable is the soundtrack. The original movie had no music at all, so why this version has voiceovers, you ask? Of course the voiceovers are added to make it more "modern" or "current", but what's really changed is the fact that this version has a score. Not only are the songs replaced by voiceovers, but they're replaced by an entire new composition. The other major difference between this movie and the original is that there are some extra scenes added to it. One of these is what happens when Dorothy first arrives in Oz. There's no indication of anything happening before she arrives, which makes you think that she simply opened her eyes and was there. Just like the original movie, she's not on any map of Oz. The other new scenes are what happen on the yellow brick road. When Dorothy first reaches the end of the road, there's no indication that anyone was there to help her out. However, when she reaches the Emerald City again, some people are waiting for her and greet her with open arms. Some people were added to this scene because there was no action at all before that point. All in all, this is an interesting update that had lots of things added to it to bring it up-to-date and make it more modern than the original movie had been even though it's still very nostalgic.
